Gone from 6 remotes to ONE

Strengths: Versatility, Strength of Infrared Beam, Customizing Features, Lithium Battery

Weakness: Battery is ok. Would like to see a stronger Lithium battery.

This is a great item in its price range ($150 to $200)
Currently with a $50 rebate! (as of April 2006)

I no longer need to use ANY of my other remotes.
It has replaced remotes for:

Digital Cable Box
VCR
HDTV
DVR
Digital Receiver

This remote has replaced all of my remotes. I no longer need any of them to use the features of the above listed items. The remote is fully customizable. It will take some tweaking, and some patience. The end result will be worth it. A remote which handles all your electronic toys.

PROS:

1. Strong IR Beam. It's not the strongest, but it is an upgrade to some of the remotes it replaces like Panasonics DVR remote (Glad I don't need to use that remote)

2. Buttons. Once you get used to it (like all remotes) you will find most of the buttons are well placed. The transition period is tough, but get used to it, you will be happy using this wonderful remote.

3. Custom buttons. Program this remote with your PC. It will take some tweaking, but once you customize it, you will be happy.

4. On-line updates. Connect it to PC, use the helpful update instructions. Done.


CONS:

1. One touch programming. Sometimes a unit will fail to switch on or switch features. You will have to simply find the item on the remote's custom unit controls, and turn it on. The extra steps make it a slight annoyance.

2. The screensaver resolution. Pictures are distorted/stretched. Low resolution. It isn't an important feature.

3. Docking station. Needs to sit perfectly on the station to charge the battery. You will know its charging when you see the screensaver is running.

Get this item, you won't be disappointed.

No more remote control piles!

Strengths: Easy to program via web, extensive library of audio/visual devices

Weakness: Some buttons are small, advanced remote functions may be difficult for novice users to get to, charger contacts are poor quality

This remote gets five stars for value and four stars for competence. Although it retails for $150-$200 in the stores, a comparable device from one of the high-end systems (Philips Pronto, CTX, etc.) integrators would cost at least $500 or more.

However, the remote leaves you exposed in a few areas. Ergonomics is good, but not excellent, as the Activity buttons (Watch TV, etc.) can be a bit too small for bigger hands. Also, some of the more slightly advanced remote functions, like Menu for ReplayTV owners is essential for basic things like finding TV programs, but requires hitting half a dozen buttons to find on the Harmony 880.

The charging system is also very weak. Often, the charging contacts are rendered useless by thin layers of dust or oil that collect on the electric receptacles between charging. When charging time comes, users will often have to clean up the contacts on both the remote and the charge pad to ensure a successful charge.

A huge positive is the RF based system (Harmony 890) that was recently released. That should enable much greater user flexibility, especially with systems hidden in other rooms or closets.

UPDATED 04/23/2008: After a few years of careful usage, a few of my remote buttons seem to be losing function. I own two 880s. One one remote, the "up volume" button either needs to be pressed very hard in order to perform its intended task or in other cases it actually lowers the volume. On my second 880 remote, one of the LCD buttons went out. But the worst problem is one that affects both remotes. The signal emitters on both remotes seem to be weakening, such that channel changes don't register appropriately. Now, I know that one can tweak how long the remote sends its signals, but its odd that the signal quality is degrading over time, despite no changes in my entertainment hardware. I'm lowering my overall rating by one star, as a result.

Harmony remotes rock

Strengths: Charging base and color screen

Weakness: Flimsy charging base and no extra battery.

I got this model this past Christmas to replace by previous Harmony remote and I love it. All I had to do was plug the new remote into my laptop PC, login to Harmony, and programing the remote was done in a few minutes. All of my old settings transferred over without a hitch. I love being able to control my 6 audio/video devices with just one remote.

The only down side of this product is that it only comes with one battery. If you leave the remote out too long or a button gets stuck, your out of commission until a recharge is done. They use a proprietary battery in this unit, which removes the ability to just pop in AAA batteries until the old charge.

The only addition I could think would be a bluetooth function to keep it updates automatically, but that would add to the price.

Harmony 880 Remote

Great remote with awesome features and good ergonomics. This is one of the best remotes from Logitech in the harmony line with all the bells and whistles like Color Screen, and a new button layout. The new button layout takes some time to get used to. The remote features rechargeable internal battery with a charging station, and can be programmed easily on the computer for virtually any device. Great remote overall. A bit pricey though.

Family can finally watch my TV

Strengths: Macros. Super easy guided setup.

Weakness: None

This remote is phenomenal! First off, the setup program is brilliant. It first asks what components you have (TV, receiver, DVD, etc.) and then asks how you use them (TV or receiver for volume? TV or satellite box to change channels?). Then, it downloads all the codes for those products from the online database and creates macros.

You literally just press the button that says "Watch TV" or "Watch DVD" and it turns on all the needed components, and puts them on the right settings. It changes the input on your TV from HDMI to Video 1 or whatever, and on my receiver changes from DBS (satellite) to DVD to get the audio.

Best of all, visiting parents and friends can now turn on my TV without having to call me at work.

Nice fancy remote with good functionality - nice...

Strengths: Fancy look, Computer programmable, Easy programming

Weakness: Programming could have been easier, Sometimes hickups, No touch screen

OK - one of the reason I bought harmony 880 remote was because it looks cool! Second reason was I was tired of using walmart/target type 10-20 bucks remotes which doesn't do anything. And lastly, I got great deal on Dell's site for this remote (under 80 bucks).

I have Panny plasma, Sanyo A/V Receiver, cable box, Coby DVD player, Sony CD player - this remote handles everything most of the times without any problem. The setup was little confusing but fairly painless. The remote does the job nicely most of the times. The battery has long life and runs weeks without charging.

Through activites when I choose any option - it turns on specific things on my plasma tv & A/V receiver - makes life a lot more easier. Otherwise to watch TV I had to use three remotes - TV, receiver & cable box. Same goes for other activities too. Once in a while, if something doesn't go ON or OFF as it was supposed to - I can turn it ON or OFF through devices menu.

I know this could be better - no hickups, touch screen etc. but for this price it was a good buy! It does most of the regular things fine and so I am giving 4 points.

Harmony 880

Strengths: Easy to use web interface

Weakness: You can't program a single task.

[4/2/2006 UPDATE] Well I contacted support about the docking issue and they knew about this issue and sent me a new dock which I recieved within 3 days. Wonder support and quick service is what I like.

I haven't looked into issue 2 or 3 but those don't seem to be big annoyances anymore.


[8/27/2005] I have now been using this remote for about 30 days. I am still happy with this remote as is my wife which is truely the most important opinion! I do have a couple of issues however I have not contacted support on them.

Issue #1: When placing the remote in the charger you must set it in just right... otherwise it will beep at you because it's not perfectly on the charger.

Issue #2: The battery life is just as doowop02 stated Lasts 1 day off of the charger.

Issue #3: Once the remote is in the charger the screen saver keeps running... it does not shut off unless you press the glow button which will turn the LCD off... carefull here as if it's not on the charger perfectly you will have to press the glow button a few times as it will move on the charger.

Overall I am happy with this remote.

I set this remote up online before I had the remote. Hooked it up and updated the device and everything worked! I couldn't believe how simple this was to use.

Logitech H880

Strengths: Completely configurable via USB & web site; Lit buttons and configurable view screen;

Weakness: Battery life & cradle; Not for noobs; Requires fine tuning but well worth it

SETUP ISSUES: If you don't like configuring gadgets then this isn't the remote for you but once you've spent some time with the configuration it is golden. You'll need to have your browser (WinXP-SP2) up to date with bug fixes or you'll have no luck setting the 880. Logitech's web site wouldn't allow me to use Firefox. The database of hardware is vast but there are many duplicates. If you pick a component that doesn't seem to work properly, try another. I'm using it with a HR10-250 DTivo, B&K Ref 50 receiver/amp, Panasonic 42" PHD7UY and a Media Server w/MCE5. It's working great.

USER HIGHLIGHTS: The buttons and screen are all configurable via USB and the web. The illumination time and the angle of tilt required to activate the lights are adjustable. This plays into the battery charge time. Initially, it was lasting about 2 days between charges. After some fine adjustments, I'm out to about 4 days now. The charge cradle is a bit of a balancing act. Make sure you hear the beep to confirm contact to the charger. I was able to adjust the stickiness of the volume control whereby 1 press = 1 notch. Most stock remotes can't do that. My g/f even likes it. Maximum control w/o the bulk she says.

CONCLUSION: Awesome control but you'll have to spend less time whining and more time fine tuning. Just think of it as an integral piece of your home theater. You get back what you put into the setup.

880 beats the old models, but still not perfection

Strengths: Color screen, auto backlight dimming feature (after 10 seconds), rechargeable battery with GREAT life, 8 available action buttons per screen within each activity (vs. 6 or 4 on other models)

Weakness: Buttons have little tactile response, and are crammed next to each other. I am constantly looking down to find the buttons, VERY difficult to memorize remote, unlike the older Harmony 688 and 659.

I have the Harmony 688, so I can make a good comparison.

PROS:
Turning on and off everything at once, controlling volume and channels from one remote is HUGE! Big points for doing what remotes should have done long ago.

I don't know why other reviews are saying the battery life is bad. I use the remote for 1 Hour a day, and only have to recharge it once every 4 weeks!

Unlike other reviewers, I use this with a ReplayTV with great success.

This remote also controls my Toshiba TV/DVD combo, which NO universal remote could control. Only a learning remote is capable, and with the USB feature, I didn't even have to teach it, I just downloaded the codes from the Harmony website during setup.

CONS:
The buttons are terrible. They have have little tactile response, and are crammed next to each other. I am constantly looking down to find them, I just can't memorize this remote.

When I push buttons too fast, there is a delay in between sending commands. Meaning it is slower than the factory remote when pushing buttons quickly. This is a major annoyance. I have set the delay to 0 ms, and there is still a constant delay. I asked Logitech customer support, and they told me to upgrade the firmware and reset the remote. I did, and no luck. So I believe it is a flaw of the remote. My harmony 688 did NOT have this problem!

Overall I give it a 4 out of 5. The awesome features and power and usability you get far outweigh the cons.

Harmony 880 Advanced Universal Remote

Strengths: Color screen, recharging stand

Weakness: Buttons don't feel great

A nice remote, its an improvment over the prior models, I have had the 688 for about two years and I like this one a lot better. All my components were already in their online database, and I only had to make 1-2 tiny adjustments after running the online wizard before it controlled everything perfectly. I reccomend it if you need the latest greatest, but other wise one of the other harmony's will work just the same.

Harmony 880

Strengths: Controls everything I own. Old stuff, new stuff and an Xbox 360. Sweet!

Weakness: Charging cradle contacts don't make good contact, charging intermittent.

In addition to the Harmony 880 I also own a large Sony remote. The Sony has to be manually programmed, a difficult and unpleasant task, but the Harmony easily programs via the Web. So far I have not had to add any commands. The remote seems to know them all although I will rearrange some of them. I bought a Media Center remote for the Xbox 360 before I bought the Harmony remote and now the MC remote sits unused with all the others.

I've cleaned the contacts in accordance with tech support's advice and haven't had any problems since. But I shouldn't have had any problems to begin with.

Banish all your remotes to the graveyard. This is an excellent remote at a reasonable price.

Best bang for the buck

Strengths: Simple programming via Logitech's web site, stylish, well designed, excellent display

While I haven't had this remote long, I could tell as soon as I opened the package charged the remote (took about 3-4 hours for the initial charge) and downloaded all of my settings that this was going to be a winner.

First I will start off by saying the dispay is so much better than Sony's dispay (night and day difference). The thinging I hated about the Sony was everytime I am watching TV I would grab for the remote and fumble to find the backlight button. Then everything looked the same and lacked any appeal factor. This unit detects as soon as you touch it on comes the remote backlit (with cute color pics) not the bland Dot Matrix dispay.

The activities button makes it a no brainer for the wife to use (not bashing the wife but she expects a user-friendly entertainment system) and the sleek design and coolness factor makes her want to use it and away with the cluttering 5 remotes. Win-win situation, it didn't take me an eternity to program and does everything I want and is simple and effective enough for her with all the coolness factor bundled up in one control.

The nicest thing was within 2 minutes I went throught the Logitech's web site. Picked all the equipment I have and told it how I wanted it set up in a simple question ad answer format. In fact I did this to see if they had all my equipment in their database before I bought the remote. They had everything, Onkyo receiver, Onkyo DVD, JVC VCR and JVC TV. Exact model on each. So I didn't have to waste time trying to teach it everything and figuring out how to relabel all the keys (done that with a different brand - not going back there). Nothing like buying a premium $100 universal remote only for it to hand during the learning process.

Ok so for the extra $70 over the Sony was it worth it? Absolutely... Easier to handle, easier to program, looks much better, easier to use and has everything there, which I can't say happened on the Sony universal remote.

I would recommend anyone looking for a universal remote to visit the Logitech website and walk through the configuration screen. If your equipment is there and you like the user-friendliness of running through the programming screen then save yourself from trying to key in codes in another remote that may or may not activate the features you want..

This is definitely what I was looking for... Wish I could have got one for under $100, but to avoid further aggravation with other models it was worth the $170 I paid at onsale.com when it was ON SALE. Also they have fast shipping - arrived in 3 days (not bad). I would definitely shop there again but I would wait for this unit to go on sale for $160-170 with shipping. Even though I love it I love a bargain and while $170 is expensive to me for a universal remote - some people charging $250 for this are out of their mind.

What A Package!

Strengths: Nice Size, Intuitive, Nice Button Feel, Attractive

Weakness: Online Programming Is Slow

I've had the remote for a week now. When I received it I jumped right in and programmed it online. None of my components in my system including the TV, Surround Sound, DVD, DBS, TIVO, or VCR are the same brand. No problem as the online programming set up the macro's I needed to handle all the activities. I still had to go back and fine tune some settings but that was relatively easy. I also used the Infrared Learning feature for a couple of commands. It worked fine. This may be the first time I can truly use one remote for all my components. I will update this review after one month to update my feelings. So far I give it 5 stars.

UPDATED 8-31-2005

I've been using it a few weeks now and it's still going well. The device does forget to turn particular pieces on from time to time but overall I'm still pleased.

Logitech Harmony 880 Advanced Universal Remote

Strengths: Aesthetically-pleasing; One touch activity commands; Highly programmable; LCD screen; Rechargeable base; Sensor lights up remote when picked up, Good customer service

Weakness: Time-consuming process to perfect desired controls; Buggy website and/or software; Though programmable, some desired functions are not currently possible; Awkward button placement

This is probably the prettiest remote I've ever seen. It has a color LCD screen, plastic buttons (as opposed to rubber), a rounded-sleek look, and is comfortable to hold. However, after two weeks of use, I have not gotten used to the button placement. The number buttons, which I use to change channels, are at the bottom and to access them, I have to shift the remote up in my hand to use. This is because by default, I have my thumb placed at the center of the remote. The buttons used to control the LCD are small and flimsy. The remote is programmed through the website. You upload your changes to the remote via USB, but only after signing up to use the website (didn't think I'd have to sign up to a website to program my remote!). It's really easy to set up the remote the first time, but perfecting the way the remote controls your devices is entirely different. After two weeks of uploading changes to the remote, I have yet to have it control exactly the way I want it to. For example, when hitting an "activity" button to turn on three devices at once, it sometimes doesn't turn one of the devices on. Additionally, it doesn't change channels or send successive signals nearly as fast as my old remotes. Though I believe there is a way to remedy these problems, it's going to be a time-consuming, trial-and-error process. The website seems to have a few bugs in it and some of the set-up functions are slower than they need to be. To add a device to control, you input the model number of the device and the IR controls are added from the Harmony website. This is far superior to using a numerical code that I've experienced with other traditional universal remotes, but there are two limitations. First, some of the commands in the Harmony database are inaccurate. You can, however, learn the command from your old remote by pointing the old remote at the Harmony. Second, per the agreement, you have a 30 device limit per year. This is a great remote, but at this point, I don't think I would spend MSRP+tax to purchase again.

Logitech Harmony 880 vs. Harmony 688

Strengths: Logitech tech support is just a phone call away and helpful sometimes, but compared to my previous Harmony 688 - Color screen with icons; that's about it so far.

Weakness: Update (08/21/05), I've lowered my rating to 1 star; Too many for the limited 200 character space available here; please see below comments. If I begin to enjoy the use of the 880, I'll let you know.

Final Update (08/27/05):
Overall opinion - Time to take advantage of my 30 return policy from where I ordered this remote and go back to my Harmony 688. Save your money and reduce the level of frustration; the Harmony 688 is a better buy. (Please see final comments A. - C.) - Doowop02

A. The Logitech Harmony 880 just flat out does not work well with my ReplayTV 5504; even standing 10 feet away from my PVR, you must point the remote in just the exact position and angle, and press buttons on the 880 just right (not too hard, not too soft, not too short and not too long). I have now worked for 10 days and over 20 hours trying to tweak and tweak. With this problem the Logitech tech support has been no help. (Please see further comments on this topic with comment item #6).

B. I have found that unlike the Harmony 688, the database for the Logitech Harmony 880 does not contain all or the correct commands for my new Denon DVD-2910. For example, I have had to use the manual learn function of the 880 for basic commands such as Next Chapter, Previous Chapter, and Select.

C. I have found that if I don't keep the 880 in its charging stand when not in use I only get 1 day worth of battery life with the remote's lithium ion battery.

1) Update (08/21/05), Linksys has a firmware upgrade posted on their web site that corrects this problem; had to contact Logitech tech support because I was unable to download the device settings file from the setup web site for the Logitech Harmony 880. Logitech tech support was helpful; they stated that some users of the 880 were experiencing this problem due to the large size of the setup file and some Linksys WRT54GS routers. They stated that a fix was in the works. I did not experience this problem with my Harmony 688. I've had to remove my PC from my home network, bypass my Linksys router and connect to the net directly from my DSL modem in order to download the setup file for my 880.

2) Device inputs for my Pioneer (VSX-36TX) receiver, Audiovox SIRPNP2 (Sirius) receiver and ReplayTV 5504 (more on ReplayTV below) were missing or incorrect on Logitech's database.

So -> 3) Have all of your device model numbers and remotes at hand; be patient and ready to spend time using the learning function of the 880 and tweak, tweak. So far I've spend a total of 8 hours (over 2 days) and am still trying to get everything working. Be prepared to tweak down to the mms (not sure what that stands for on the setup web site) on the setup web site to get the timing of device inputs to work between devices and between inputs for a single device; again be patient (I tell myself).

4) Favorite channels can be saved in the 880, but labels for each channel would be nice; you can add an icon, but where do I get an MSNBC icon; maybe when I have more time to work on the setup of my 880 beyond getting my devices to work I can create one that says MSNBC.

5) Update (08/21/05), Tiny nubs of buttons along side of the 880; at least with the Harmony 688 these buttons are larger and have a distinctive feel compared to the rest of the remote. On the 880 all buttons feel the same compared to the overall feel of the remote; so with the lights down and watching a movie, good luck trying to find the up/down volume; even with these buttons back lit I have to turn a light on to find most buttons on the remote before I have to use a finger nail just to press them.

6) Update (08/21/05), I hope you TiVo folks have better luck then I have controlling my ReplayTV with the 880. I had really no problems with the 688. With the 880 you have to press the nubby buttons just right; not to long of a press; not too light of a press; make sure the 880 is pointed in exactly the right location toward your ReplayTV (just pointing the remote at the ReplayTV doesn't get it) and at exactly the right angle; or forget it. Even standing just 10 feet away from my ReplayTV unit I experience the same frustration trying to control the unit with the 880. So I tweak some more and ...

I'm still tweaking just to watch TV; and yes I can get up to set the input setting on my TV correctly. And true; my Pioneer receiver is an older model and newer models are always on the market, and keeping up with them can be difficult but ... for $249 I was hoping the 880 could manage it for me.

Update (08/21/05), My 8 hours over 2 days of tweaking is now 12 hours over 5 days. If you like this kind of stuff and enjoy the challenge of trying to figure something out and making it work ... enjoy. I couldn't imagine trying to spend this same amount of time on the phone with Logitech tech support. I've been following the helpful hints and the instructions on the Logitech Harmony web site.

I do hope my experience with my 880 will help you with your decision to purchase. I'm still deciding myself before my 30 day return period is over.

Logitech Harmony 880 Advanced Universal Remote

Strengths: Easy to set up, buttons are pretty well laid out

Weakness: Reliant upon web to update the unit and their site is not always responsive. Unit doesn't send codes at times or delay is too long and no way to tweak it as you could with say a Pronto remote

I was looking for a replacement remote for our old Pronto T2000 that was now some 5 years old and something that could hook up to USB instead of a Serial port like the Pronto. I probably should have gone with a newer Pronto, not that this remote is bad, it just isn't as flexible as the Pronto and from the pictures I was expecting a bit more out of the display screen than what it delivered. My wife complains that she points it at the TV, etc. and sometimes things turn on and sometimes they don't. The onboard help is nice but you shouldn't have to use it every time you use the remote because one unit or another didn't switch on and you have to resend the code. I'm assuming the remote just resends the code as opposed to changing the internal delay involved with that code to make it better the next time.

I'll probably end up buying a new Pronto instead and selling this one on Ebay. Again, nothing wrong with it, but I was expecting more from some other reviews I had read.

Everything but "quality control."

Strengths: USB backup/configuration, intuitive interface and design, rechargeable, great warranty/replacement policies.

Weakness: IR range not as good as my previous 688, recharging issues (reported by many), poor quality control, fragile.

I love the Harmony remote line, I really do. But I just can't recommend them. They seem perfect. They do everything. They're easy to set up and a cinch to understand how to use. BUT, they break. They break all the time. Now I like my toys. I take care of them. But over the last year I've had to replace 3 Harmony remotes. I had two 688's become problematic: on one the button labels started wearing off after only a few months, the replacement after a few more months had the same issue with the added bonus of the buttons malfunctioning. I decided to take the leap and bump up to the "Cadillac" of Harmony remotes. I figured they would have stepped it up and sorted out the quality control issues. $250 dollars later I was the proud owner of the 880. It's been great, but then just the other day, it started randomly rebooting. I've tried updating the firmware, everything, but all I can figure is there's some kind of short inside the unit. Either way I'm now embarking on my 3rd Harmony return. I just find this really quite ridiculous that I've returned 3 Harmony products to Logitech this year alone! And they're so darn tempting, because when they work, they are perfect. It's just, well, they stop working sometimes, and that just doesn't fly. I won't be buying another Harmony product. I'll just keep returning the one I have as long as they'll exchange it. When that's over, I'll look elsewhere.

Logitech Harmony 880 review. Not as good as expected

Strengths: The device looks nice. I like the idea of having one remote and am technical enough to make it work. Help function is very nice.

Weakness: I should not have to use the help function as much as I do which is close to 50% of the time for the same function. The web site is extremly slow.

I like the remote and had been waiting for it to come out for half a year but now that I have it I am disappointed. I can make it work but my non technical partner has problems with it. I works with the Tivo and cable box fine but has problems getting the correct inputs and modes on my Plasma TV and my Bose entertainment center. I have tried to fix issues but the same issue will pop back up again after a while. A simple power off comand only works part of the time.

I am going to keep working at it but but when a device causes hardships in the relationship it tends not to stick around for long.

Looks great, but hold on!

Strengths: Well conceived product. Easy to use once programmed.

Weakness: Very tempremental device, often reboots. Fragile. Often fails to charge properly on cradle.

I was so hopeful when I read about this product. It looks great on paper but the reality is that this tempremental little device is not ready for prime time. Any quick motion will cause it to reboot (which takes 1-2 min). Most times you pick it up from the cradle it will reboot. It often fails to charge and you show up to find a dead remote. Often fails to turn on or off one of the components. I want my $ back!!!

Harmony 880

Strengths: Controls many electronics

Weakness: Rarely works efforlessly!

When you switch from TV to DVD, it will turn off the DVD ( because you had to turn it on, when you put the disc in the player). THis happens quite frequently, when switching from one activity to another.
This was a gift from the Ellen Show....and thanks! But...I'd be very unhappy, and would have returned it if I'd actually spent money for it.

Summary:
1. Programming - fine tuning takes at least on week. Basic programming/initialization is not enough, during initial use keep your old remote near by. I'm still in process of finalizing the remote functionality after spending 2h*5days time. Hint: Add TV ON/OFF, Receiver ON/OFF, etc to the activity screen like Watch DVD, it saves you a lot of time cause sometimes the ON/OFF is not working very well as noted in other real reviews. 2nd Hint: set the delay for each device to 100ms otherwise the remote speed of sending commands is very slow.
2. Initial device configuration which you will get after initialization is bad. I manually check/updated the configuration for almost all devices except the light controller. Still need to fix the volume button for my tv :).
3. Buttons are not perfect, you can't use most of them in the dark without seeing them.
4. And yes, web interface is kind of slow and buggy (2 times it didn't allow me to finish the process). I'd prefer to have a standard windows program it will allow to do thing faster.
5. Again charger is a problem, you have to position the remote very carefully and when remote is out of the bed charger emits relatively bright light.
6. I wrote the email to logitech and got an answer in 1 week. By that time I found how to change the speed (delay between commands) and how to fix some other staff by myself.

Will keep it cause I found it on sale for ~160 with tax & delivery, otherwise I'd return it. Can always sell it on ebay, right?

Configuration Software is Buggy and hard to use

Strengths: Nice concept. Once programmed (hours of effort), does seem to work.

Weakness: Setup Software and Web Site are NOT user friendly and are very hard to use, slow, and buggy.

The product comes with desktop software that can be installed locally and used to program the remote to work with all of your devices. Unfortunately, the software is slow and bugy. It hung 4 times while I tried to configure devices and each time I had to kill the software and start over. It would display a status bar that would just sit at 0% forever. Also displays a STATUS button, but when you click on it, it just displays an empty text box - real useful and user friendly (NOT!!) Its very confusing because you can use the desktop software or the website and sometimes the web site will open the desktop software. So, never quite sure where to do what. Desktop software would not update the remote, so had to figure out how initiate this from the web site, which finally did update the remote (although very slowly). Just be prepared to waste a LOT of time trying to program the remote using their buggy software. Also for some reason, it would not work properly with my Yamaha receiver. Since my home theater is downstairs, and my compute upstairs, I've probably had to run up/down the steps 15 times trying to get it to work properly.

Harmony 880.....Kid tested

Strengths: Kid resistant...not kid proof tho...

I just want to add a little to the reviews out there if anyone has kids.....you need this remote....my 10 month old loves remotes and my wife bought me this Harmony 880 when I actually wanted a cheaper one...thank goodness she didn't....it's been dropped 100 times, banged on a floor register 10 to 15 times, chewed on by both dogs and a kid, and is still going strong. I've had no problems with it at all...and yes there are a few quirks but overall a very great and user friendly device

Good remote for simple activities

Strengths: Easy to program via "wizards" on the web. Nice bright display.. automatically lights up when you turn it on.

Weakness: Hard to program for complex functions. Sometimes hard to diagnose problems.

The initial programming of this remote is remove is very easy... just follow the prompts of the online wizzard that guide you through the programming. The problems come if you want to do anything complex or if things get out of sync... this is partially a problem of universal remotes in general. I've spend several hours programming this remote to get everything coordinated just right and its still has problems. If it uses the toggle-on-off command for a particular device and it thinks the device is off when its really on, things get out of sync. I've also had cases where things were working just fine and for some reason the remote stopped controlling a particular function of one of my devices.... and resolving the problem wasn't just a matter of re-syncing the config with the web config. Anyway.. It *will be* a nice remote once I get everything set up and programmed properly. Until then, I often revert to the old individual remotes that came with each device.

Harmony 880 Advanced Universal Remote

Strengths: Very simple to use via Logitech's website. Intuitive and useful instructions are provided on the site. Color screen and excellent aesthetics make this remote the best I've seen before.

Weakness: If the one touch operation (macro) fails, it's difficult to remedy the problem.

I've had a Marantz Universal Remote for a long time now and this Logitech is a welcome change or dare I say improvement. There are glitches and bugs, but overall it is a great product. The best part is it's easy to set up and does not require much time learning the various infra codes for each device's commands as it's all done online. The design seems durable and sleek. I'll have to see how it performs as time progresses.

Harmony 880 -- a great remote

Strengths: Very customizable; easily controls complicated set-ups; remote can learn codes or customer service can add codes -- no need to send the remote in for updates

Weakness: Small btns; tiny btn text makes it hard for those with bad eyesight; somewhat hard to find btns by feel; doesn't use standard batteries (but has charger); site doesn't always have right codes

* I think this remote is great. It's easy to use and makes controlling my setup easy for just about anyone. I no longer need to provide instructions for others on how to control our system -- I just show them the remote and explain how it works. My wife, who is not technically inclined and prefers things that Just Work, loves it.

* The 880 uses "activities" to control devices. For example, I have "Watch DVR", "Watch TV", "Watch DVD", "Listen to iTunes", etc. Switching activities turns on devices, turns off others, and switches inputs as needed. You can also control devices directly.


* I have the most common functions set in each activity. For example, I have the DVR's "Program List" function, which brings up a list of recorded programs, available in the "Watch DVR" activity. Rarely-used functions can be left in the device's direct controls or left out entirely. (They will still be available on the website.)


* Both my father and my mother-in-law have had a little trouble using the remote because it's very difficult to see the button labels with bad eyesight. Once they learned where the important buttons like volume-up/down and channel-up/down were, they had an easier time. The buttons are a little on the small side, so if you have large fingers, you may want to use one in person before purchasing.


* Instead of using standard AA or AAA batteries, the 880 has a charger. Resting the remote on the charger charges it, but it can be a little picky about placement -- I've found that I need to check the screen to ensure it's charging. The remote does fine on a single charge for at least a few days; you'll want to have the charger located in a convenient place such as an end table.


* I've found that when the Harmony website has inaccurate codes for some components, I was able to either learn commands from another remote (either the original or a One-for-All, which I recommend having on hand for such occasions) or contact customer service to have them add commands.


* There isn't much of a tactile difference between some buttons. For example, the "Channel Up" and "Previous Channel" buttons are right next to each other (on the right, in the silver part). Thankfully, you can learn where the button is, but it'd be better if one could tell which was which immediately just by feel.


* I've purchased two of these remotes. I found that submerging the first remote control in a glass of skim milk seemed to affect it in a negative way, so I needed to buy another. So dependent was I on this remote that I ordered its replacement before I had even finished trying to repair it. When I received the replacement, I plugged it into the computer, went to the website, and updated the remote -- everything was back to normal.


* The Harmony 880 is a great remote. Though there are a few things I'd change about it, I've been extremely happy with it. I would purchase it again -- heck, I *did* purchase it again.

Harmony 880 update 4/23/06/DONT BUY

Strengths: none so far, cant get it to update program/ broken again

Weakness: DOESNT WORK

Harmony replaced this remote that I purchased at Christmas in February after it basically didnt work during that period of time. The new one has worked reasonably weIl until today, completely broken, it wont due anything. I WILL REPEAT WHAT I SAID ORIGINALLY, THIS IS THE MOST FRUSTRATING PRODUCT I HAVE PURCHASED IN A LONG TIME. DO NOT BUY THIS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, YOU WILL BE SORRY. have spent two days trying to contact Harmony by phone and e-mail and havent gotten help yet. the web innerface was easy to use, but i cant get it to update, so the remote does not work. I will never buy another Harmony or Logitech product again. I wish I had not bought on the web, as I would have returned it to a retailer like Best Buy by now. This is the worse technical device I have ever had with the worst constumer sevice from the manufactor. I bought this for my wife as she was tired of using several remotes for the home theater, but this is very frustrating. I dont know what product to recommend, but this is not it. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!

Harmony 880 Advanced Universal Remote

Strengths: Color screen, online programming, size/feel.

Weakness: It can take awhile to set up, Logo screen stay's on after the remote is placed in charger.

Overall I am very satisfied with the remote. It does take some time to get everything operating just right but finally having just one remote to operate everything is well worth it. The battery for me has not been an issue as the remote is put back in the charging cradle at the end of the day. It would be nice if the screen automatically turned off when the remote is set in the cradle rather then turn on. Overall for me, small issues. Hopefully software updates will fix allot of the small problems.

Worthless Web Interface.

Strengths: Great concept. Good reviews.

Weakness: Web interface designed by idiots.

I tried to install the software on two different machines with two different security suites. Got the software to install. Couldn't get the web interface to work. First, the interface asked that I use only ancient browsers (Netscape 6.2 or earlier.) Second, it insisted that I drop my firewall. Even when I left my machine naked it didn't work. Called tech support. They gave me some total BS about a naked client being required to get database access over the internet.

That'll come as a big surprise to a lot of other companies.

Goes back Monday.

Logitech Harmony 880 Advanced Universal Remote

Strengths: looks cool

Weakness: Reliability. Web based configuation tool. Charger Stand. Everything about this remote is a weakness.

While in theory the Logitech Harmony remotes work very well, I have yet to see them work their magic. My advice would be to go with a brand of universal remote that has years of experience with home audio video equipment.

My overall experience with this remote has been one of the most frustrating of any electronic appliance I have ever owned. From the charger not charging properly to the entire remote not being able to communicate with any of my compters, all this remote has been able to do is take up space on my coffee table and give me a head ache. Don't buy it!

Overall this product performs well above the asking price on this unit and to me is the best remote out on the market. The quick USB connection to program all the needs in the house was wonderful. The nice quick charging base is also a plus!!.

Harmony 880 Remote Review

Strengths: Controls every component and allows you to set up events.

Weakness: Does not transmit via radio frequency so components in closed cabinets can not be controlled.

The remote worked as designed but I sent it back because I need on that sends via RF not IR. The 890 does this but is more expensive. If I didn't need RF capability, I would keep this remote.

Don't Buy The Harmony 880 unless...

Strengths: Good infrared signal; nice 'glow' display; rechargeable; eventually will work decently.

Weakness: Absolute horror to program; didn't load on MAC (had to load on PC laptop); small, VERY SMALL activity buttons; $150 but no user manual? (you can d/l one online though); weird volume/channel controls

...you have a LOT of time to program this bad boy AND a very good knowledge of such devices. I'm not a computer geek nor am I a newbie. I've had my share of tough-to-program remotes and equipment but this one is BY FAR the most difficult. I'm now on my 3rd day of tweaking and it's still not acting like it should. The USB-connected program runs you in loops to return to a previous setting, ie, no 'back' option, it asks you questions such as "how do you control your volume on your TV?" then only gives you 2 options--the TV or the AV receiver. Well, I use my CABLE remote for volume, so I had to switch MY gear to accommodate THEIR choices. This isn't the only instance, either. Another issue--I have set the TV up 2 ways; one to play through the surround system and one with just the TV speakers. In order to switch from one to the other you either have to completely shut down everything and restart, or you have to open the 'devices' menu, close down the AV, switch from HDMI to Component connections, the readjust you volume. Granted, not a big deal but certainly not the easy-to-use panacea they want you to think. Moreover, to get to certain areas of the device you have featured--let's say the TV again) you have to scroll across the screen (up to 4 pages) to change things like aspect ratio, PIP, etc. Yeah, it sorta kinda almost nearly makes all your other remotes redundant, but given the quirky nature of this thing I'm thinking it'd be just as easy using the remotes that came with the devices and saving yourself alot of money and frustration. Had I not cut off the UPC code to send in for the rebate I would have sent this back for a refund.

Not the best Harmony remote

Strengths: - Easy to program via web - Versatile - controls almost everything! - Simple to use - Rechargeable batteries are EXCELLENT

Weakness: - Dim backlighting/small button labels - Doesn't connect well with charging cradle - Longevity (or lack thereof)

Okay, so here's the deal - Logitech's Harmony remotes are incredible electronics. They're key examples of usability - programming your remote has never been this easy!

However, there are some issues with this particular model. I bought mine more than 2 years ago, and loved it at first...until about a year in, when the problems started.

The issues:

1) The remote comes with a charging cradle, but for some reason it's always been hard to get the connection to hold. So to avoid picking up the remote and finding it hasn't charged, you need to fiddle with it for ~2 mins when you put it in the cradle to get a good connection and make sure it's charging. This was frustrating, but not a deal-breaker.

2) The real deal-breaker: the buttons. Sure, the remote looks sleek & all...but its hard plastic buttons leave a lot to be desired.

To start with, their placement makes it difficult to feel your way to a button. Sure, it's backlit - but sometimes you don't want to take your eyes off the TV to hit 'Pause'.

Then there's the working issue. A little after a year into my Harmony 880 ownership (right after the warranty was done, thanks to Murphy's Law), the Volume Up button stopped working. It would only work when you pressed it REALLY hard, and then only sporadically. More often than not, it would turn the volume DOWN.

Soon thereafter, other buttons stopped working. I looked around online, and found it was a common problem - apparently the connectors to the circuit board don't work too well with the hard plastic buttons. I've done some hacking to fix it, with limited success.

In a nutshell, this is a great idea with poor execution. The way the remote is constructed made me wonder about its longevity when I first got it, and sadly, my fears were confirmed.

If you're in the market for this sort of thing, I'd recommend going with the Harmony One. It seems to fix the button AND the charging issues. Heck, I even plan to pick one up...once I get over the fact that this remote didn't last as long as I would expect it to, given the price.

You can't go wrong with the idea of the Harmony remotes - just be sure to choose one that has usable buttons that feel like they'll last.

Great remote

Strengths: Everything! Concept, screen, setup, etc.

Weakness: Buttons might be a little too small for some people.

This is the first all-in-one remote I've tried and I love it. It took me 25 minutes to setup and worked perfectly with my system, which is mainly Sony with a DirectTV DVR. This is the best thing I've bought for the house in years! There are 16 favorites buttons that can be customized to the specific channels you want AND you can customize with JPG logos for each channel or just use text. My 7 year old can even use it. I can't wait for my parents to come visit, they had such a hard time dealing with movies for my kids while they were here. Even my mom will be able to use this remote. Thanks Logitech!

This is something done right!

Strengths: Excellent concept...well executed, stylish, versatile

Weakness: A little hard to read display with "old eyes"...

This product allows anyone to set up and control a complex array of gear with mere patient consideration of what needs to happen. Let's face it, some of this stuff is quite complex; but figure it out once, reflect that understanding in the programming steps, and you are done for life! The web interface could not be more understandable and clear. This well built remote covers all the bases and looks good doing it. After over two years of experience with this remote, I continue to be a very happy owner/user of this fine product.

Outstanding remote!

Strengths: Extremely customizable and easy to program.

Weakness: Blue LED on bas station is VERY bright.

This is hands down the best remote I have ever owned. It controls all of the electronics we own out of the box (even our remote controlled fan) and has the ability to learn the signals of ANY IR device just by pointing the device at it and pressing the button to be learned. Battery life seems to last several days if you leave it off the base station.

The only gripe I have is that the blue power LED on the base station is bright enough to light up my side of the room even with the remote covering it up. But then, my wife tells me I have the world's best night vision....so your experience may differ....

Great Remote

Strengths: Strong IR signal, versatility, display

Weakness: Price

I love this remote so much I'm getting my parents one for Christmas. I see a lot of negative comments about the charger. I've been using it for 6 months and I haven't had any issues charging. The remote drops into the cradle every time. I charge my remote about once a week whenever it's down to 1 bar on the battery meter. The IR signal is great on this remote. It even has a IR transmitter on the back of the remote! Programming on the Logitech website is a snap. I wish they could come down in price though.

This remote works perfectly and was easy to program and fine tune to my needs. However, as noted by others, the charger is too finicky. Over the course of the last few months, the remote became more and more difficult to place exactly right in the cradle to charge it. Now the remote will not charge at all. This appears to be a cradle issue. The remote will beep to indicate charging and then immediately beep again to indicate the remote has lost correct contact with the cradle. Hmmm, need to think about how much I'm willing to pay each year for a new remote.

Great remote

Strengths: Easy to use. Docking station w/rechargable batteries is awesome. One push button auto changes to the device(s), and changes specific input required.

Weakness: LCD is like first color laptop (not active matrix). Remote only does IR and not RF signals.

Great remote overall...replaced my 6 remotes. I have a a couple ceiling fans that includes an RF remote, but the Harmony only does IR. Price was reasonable and I would definitely recommend.

Highly recommend the 880 Harmony remote. Very easy to use and program, Re-chargeable in cradle. Easily make changes when necessary. Never had a better universal remote for HDTV and surround sound and controls every other component.

Strengths: Controls all of the components in our HT system without fault. VERY easy to program, VERY easy to use. Comfortable style.

Weakness: None that I have found so far, and we have used it for well over a year.

We absolutely LOVE this remote! We have them in our great room, our HT room, and the master bedroom. If programmed to your PERSONAL use, it's THE BEST on the market... and we've tried plenty of them!! Thank you, Logitech for this GREAT unit!!! Harmony 880 Remote Flawed

Strengths: It works much like like the older 660, but with a better display.

Weakness: The buttons are hard to read and provide poor tactile feedback.

It appears to have been designed with somebody's ill-conceived concept of style. As a result the buttons are hard to read, and don't provide the tactile feedback necessary to position fingers in the correct position without looking.

Great Remote

Strengths: Had all my devices including the MOXI.

Weakness: Had all my devices but not all buttons on other remotes

The other reviews were very good so I mainly want to add my slightly different thoughts.

My replay tv and Motorola moxie box were both in the list of devices which it found automatically when I entered the model numbers.

I did have to add a few buttons to the programmable button list for my moxie box control. I also had to manually train the remote for a few of the buttons I added but that was fairly straight forward also. That is once you get use to selecting from the list of options from the main window showing the list of activities ("customize buttons - additional buttons).

I don't find the buttons to hard to hit but if you have really big hands with really big fingers it might be a bit difficult. The size of the remote is nice and bigger buttons would mean a much bigger remote.

I have no problems putting the remote on the charging station. Just make note to remove the plastic sticky sheet from the bottom of the remote and from what I have read in other comments keep the contacts clean. Don't touch them and wipe the dust off the cradle with a dust cloth if you keep the remote off the cradle for extended periods.

I really like this remote though it could use a few improvements. As for future improvements that would be possible by software upgrades (are you reading this logitech?).

If would be nice if they did a more thorough job to included all buttons that are on a remote in the list of device/commands for major units (like my moxie box and Panasonic's replay TV). That would have elliminated the need to manually program a few of the buttons. They did have a selection for a single step control of my TVs to set up composite 2 (my moxie box input). My TV remote required me to go to video input selection and then selection composite 2. I didn't know there was a direct go to composite 2 capability. So that was a good step above my old MX500 which was nice 5 years ago but I had to program nearly every button for my AV receiver, replay TV, and it didn't even seem to be able to handle the moxie box.

It was annoying that everytime I removed the remote from the USB connection that it wanted to turn off my TV (which I did a number of times when first setting it up everytime I needed one more custom button).
I eventually hid the remote away from the TV when I disconnected so that it would not turn it off.

The automated setup got me 95% to where I wanted the remote to be for controlling. A little more setup got me the rest of the way.

The flexibility of the setup after the initial settings was nice.

I didn't really care about setting up pictures in the remote so I have no comments there.

I using it only in the main living room with the TV so I have no problems with the hold a charge time.

Summary, I like this new remote. I might eventually buy another one for my bedroom so that I only need one remote there. (Anyone want to buy an MX500? It was nice at the time but it does have problems controlling a moxie box).

Very Satisfied

Strengths: It does exactly what I bought it for, that is to replace several remotes. I like the style and features and it's been able to be programmed to do "just" about everything that I needed.

Weakness: It is a tech device, so even though they try to make the software as simple as possible, it might be a challenge for some. The simplicity does hinder the capabilities for high end users to an extent.

All in all, I really like the Harmony 880 and am very happy with it's performance and flexibility. I don't like the limitations of the software but understand Logictech's aim to make things simple for the normal tech IQ person. I would like to have more features accessible to those of us who want higher end, but it's a compromise like everything else. The device isn't perfect, but none is. Logictech has a great forum for answering questions and learning more about programming the device. I would definately buy one again or upgrade in the future.

Not an improvement over the previous versions

Strengths: color screen, rechargeable battery, tilt sensor for backlighting

Weakness: fewer buttons than previous generation, flimsy keys, small keys

I have owned a Harmony 680 for over 2 years, and was thinking that it might be time to step up to the 880. Well, thankfully the store I purchased it from has an excellent return policy, as two days of using this remote made me very sure that Logitech took a big step backwards with this remote. I have two peeves that I'll focus on:
1) build quality
The keys on this remote, especially the number keys, appear to have a lot of play in them, permitting them to move all over the place. I don't like to have to look at where I'm putting my fingers to do something, so I will slide my fingers over the keys to get my bearings, which is assisted by the bumps on the 5 key. However, fresh out of the box, the keys all wiggled and wobbled and sounded very cheap as my fingers slid across them. This leaves me very concerned as to how well this remote will stand up to daily use.
2) elimination of buttons
I will admit, I have a fairly complex setup, but there are some keys missing which made a ton of sense. One, for instance, is the Rec'd key that my 680 has. With the proliferation of DVR devices, I would think that one could warrant a hard key to pull up the list of recorded shows. I was able to make a soft key out of this on the screen, but still. Where I was most disappointed was the lack of a sound key and a pic key. On my 680, I can push the sound key to get a list of selected commands relating to the sound settings - in my case, night mode, level, different effects, etc. And the pic key was useful for having the zoom controls for my tv, as well as the PIP controls, etc. Again, I could have put those as soft keys into each activity on the 680, but it would have been time consuming and resulted in a lot of clutter on the screen.

Maybe it's just me with my enjoyment of having solid buttons to push (that don't feel like they're going to snap or pop off any moment), but I was very disappointed with this remote.

Good Remote, poorly desjgned charger

Strengths: Overall, it does what it is supposed to do and is easy to program.

Weakness: Recharger is a disaster

No remote is perfect. But the Harmony 880 is overall outstanding -- except for the battery charger. Sufficiently so that I bought a second for another setup elsewhere in the house -- that one a Costco special for less money and different design.

Oddly, the 880 is the more sophisticated design, but the capacity rating of the battery is the newer and less expensive version is about 35 percent greater. NO difference in size, and it interchanges which is a good thing.

That's because the charger for the 880 has been a problem from the beginning and appears to have failed completely. We now charge both batteries on a single charger which destroys some of the functionality. The problem is not unique to my 880. My friends who bought the 880 at about the same time have all had a problem with the charger.

In theory it is well designed. But it is, as others not, tetchy to begin with about how it is nestled into its cradle. Ours has been unable to recharge the battery for several weeks and not well before that.

The difficulty is that it is a three contact charger, i.e. three metal points on the back of the 880 contact three spring loaded points in the charger. One difficulty seems to be that the springs are not of the same strength (apparently an assembly problem) and just overall the remote and the charger don't make good contact.

It is a frustrating problem for an otherwise well thought out and executed remote control. I would give this five stars based solely on the remote. Based on the problem with the charger, it has to be downgraded significantly. The charger is such an unmitigated disaster that I wouldn't buy it again despite otherwise really liking it. It borders on being a one star because a remote you can't charge is useless and I am fortunate to have a second charger.

Logitech Harmony 880 Advanced Universal Remote

Strengths: none

Weakness: Buttons too small, display too small, hard to program, and when programed, doesn't work correctly.

One of the big disapointments in my living room. buttons way too small, not easy to use. Several trips to program it resulted in shelving the unit. The TiVo control has more use by far that the Harmony 880. This is a good idea still waiting to happen.

GREAT REMOTE CONTROL!

Strengths: Easy to program; online access finds even the most obscure devices; truly a universal remote

Weakness: Channel selection slower than original remote (more of a lag)

This remote has replaced 6 remotes that we had on our coffee table. Now we have room for coffee. The online programming function is very intuitive and easy to follow. The on-the-remote HELP feature is also an A+.

Excellent powerful remote

Strengths: Once programmed, can truly control lots of devices at once.

Weakness: Programming takes a while, if you have lots of equipment. But I can't see how they could have made it any faster.

Like an iPod, this is a very well designed, functional, intuitive piece of electronics. Programming is relatively easy, they have a vast database of the needed codes.
Once programmed, we've used it every day, and no longer need our other remotes. It stays charged with the base well, and my elderly mother had no problem using it.

Sensitive, but worth the trouble.

Strengths: Once you set it up, you're done! You'll never have to remember how things are plugged in to each other again. If the remote ever stops working correctly, reload configs via the USB.

Weakness: Battery connection is weak. I had to tape the battery, so that it didn't slip around in the battery slot. A little complex to setup. Web USB interface is clunky.

Overall, the remote is wonderful. I bought it for my parents (who are older and not as tech-savy as much of the world). They don't have many complaints, except for the battery problem described above, which has been solved with a piece of tape. However, it's disappointing that Logitech (a company whose products I love because of their design and durability) would have a battery compartment that is too large for the battery, therefore allowing the battery to slip and slide inside the remote, and lose contact between the remote and the battery itself.

Personally, I think the web interface with the USB is clunky. I'd prefer an actual Windows-based program. As others have said, the web interface doesn't play nice with Firefox, so it's annoying to have to copy and paste web address from that to IE in order to log in and change things. It does work okay, once you figure it out. But have patience, because communication with the remote isn't super-speedy. Oh, and apparently there is a queue for installing the software from their servers to the remote. How lame is that?

In the end, the 880 makes life easier. Want to watch a DVD? Use the Activity "Watch a DVD." Done. No more writing my parents notes detailing what to turn on, off, change the input on, etc.

I would purchase again. And probably should purchase one for myself...

Strengths: Relatively easy to use. Does exactly what it says it can do.

This is a great product. The online manual is useless, highly recommend you do your research first, then read the FAQs, read the support issues. This will help you understand the issues when you start to program the remote. Online support was very responsive.

Once you get this thing working you will wonder why it took you so long to get one. It tamed the 12 remotes in my house including the fans!!!!!!!!!!!

I had a Harmony 630 and decided to upgrade to 880 when we bought our Bose lifestyle and 50" Sony SXBR TV system. I am very happy (so far) with the 880. IT is very nice to look at and has the power and functionality to back it up too. I mean, isn't that really the reason for getting a Harmony, funtionality? Well, I also read all of the other reviews before making my purchase and was a bit skeptical and nervous based on those reviews. "It's fragile, hard to use, and not worth the money" they said. As soon as I got the remote of the box, I put the battery in and charged it - that next morning I went to web site and updated all of my info on the website (I already had a 630 remember?). Within literally 15 minutes I was using my new 880 with ALL of the correct codes. It took me longer to learn how to update pics to the remote than it did to learn it's functionality! I am somewhat advanced and found the website easy to use. Overall, I am truely happy with my 880.

Logitech Harmony 880 Advanced Universal Remote

Strengths: Handles all my AV units flawlesly (except the 'pause' on TiVo). Setup done via USB port on computer. The motion-detector light is genius - when you pick up the unit it lights up so you can see what you are doing.

Weakness: Complicated set up. (Tech Support at Logitech was extremely helpful - indeed, they set up much of my unit on their end.) The keys are small and not well differentiated.

Overall, I love the unit. Now that it is set up and now that I have become comfortable with the key layout, it works flawlessly.

Could be Logitech's Best Harmony Remote

Strengths: Customizable in every way from Individual menu items to wallpaper image and screensaver images. Learns every remote of pretty much any device. Sleek Design. Rechargeable Batteries and Convenient Dock.

Weakness: Some keys can be cramped so have to get used to spacing. Keys have no real feedback. Do have to make sure remote is positioned properly in dock.

Purchased this remote for a steal while onsale even though I already had a Sony LCD UNiversal Remote....which was kinda bulky. The design of this remote is sleek and it is a breeze to program once you've connected it via USB and started up the software. The only thing I've found it doesn't control yet is my Sirius S50 but that will probably come in time. The color lcd display is bright and one of the highlights of this remote is the ability to customize the background and menus and screensaver of the remote. Very ergonimic design with grips on the bottom....very comfortable

Strengths: Web based programming, rechargable docking station, customizable buttons, background and even slideshow

Weakness: Install CD was bent, so did not work in my drive, but simply downloaded the install from Logitech website.

The Harmony 880 Advanced Universal Remote is truly the best universal remote for this price. (I paid about $180 from a PriceGrabber.com store front and had no issues)

Sleek and Ergonomic design with rechargeable docking station are a big plus.

Web-based set-up makes changing/adding devices and programming macros extremely easy. Simply follow the instructions, type in the model numbers, click which devices you wish to have on or off and you're all set.

Even non-tech savy people can handle it.

Strengths: no need for any of the original remotes. easy programing with the computer. Colorful display with activity buttons like watch TV or Play CD player. It will turn on only what you need tuned on.

Weakness: some buttons are very small. Programing can take a while if you want it to controll just like the original remotes.

It's a great remote. The best I'v ever used. It's nice to use the computer to program. All you got to do is tell them the model numbers and it programs by it self and your ready to go. I had to program a lot more then that though because it didn't have all the same buttons as some of the original remotes. So there might be some extra programing if you want to make the remote do everything just like the original remotes. Once you get it all figured out you don't have to use your original remotes ever again.

Strengths: Easy to use Web based setup

Weakness: Nakamichi set up was weak.

Everything worked as expected. It took a little longer for my setup mainly because the Nakamichi Soundspace 10 default settings did not do the job. I had to customize and teach specific buttons in order for it to work properly. Once programming was completed, it worked well. Quality and feel could be better for the retail price, but in general, not too bad. I got rid of 6 remotes and more importantly, no macros to program and MY WIFE and my 4 year old uses it with no problems! Built in intelligence allows the unit to switch functions in any state with no problem, macros can't do that... In summary, does what it suppose to do, well worth the money. Battery life is good

Strengths: Ease of use and setup. Even the most non-technnical person can use my entertainment system now. The automatic back is really an ingenious feature.

Weakness: Trying to customize the unit is a little teadious at first like re-assiging the buttons or changing the functions of certian buttons.

Overall I think it is a great product and I would tell anyone who has more than one remote control to get one of these.
It is a little tedious customizing the remote, but at least you CAN do it. I had the touch screen Sony for a while and really that product was lacking, the macros never worked.

Strengths: Controls all components. Easy initial setup. Computer programming.

Weakness: Online manual is confusing. Takes time and thought to customize.

This remote has replaced 4 other remotes. All of my components were on their programming list. The great part is that they thought of most everything needed. The key functions of each component are available. Selected units are turned on and set to the correct activity. The most confusing part is the customization. My only request is that Logitek improve the instructions and online programming.

This is a great product. You actually don't have to be geeky to use this. The setup on the PC was simple. Once I plugged it into the USB port, the program came up on the PC and stepped me through the step by step programming of the Harmony 880. I unhooked the remote, checked it out on my system, hooked it back up to the PC and made a few corrections and that was it.

Since then, I have made tweaks to the programming to allow me to use the remote exactly how I use my components. It's Great!!! ...and it's simple.

Finally a remote that allows me to box up my other remotes.

Have had the same experiences as others with Harmony...it's the best remote for the money that's available anywhere....but...
My current 880 is the second I've had...the first started randomly rebooting after about a month...my current one is 2 months old and has had no issues...so far..

I also had a 688 which I loved...it just died after about a year. Harmony replaced it no charge. the 2nd one also lasted about a year and is now sitting dead in a drawer...I admit that I did not contact harmony after the second one died....I went out and bought the 880!!!

So I'm torn over this companyremote. I love the remote, but will reserve judgement until my 880 dies...until then I keep my 4 year old Sony Commander handy just in case...it's clunky but still works great...

Wonderful remote, especially for tech unsavvy or...

Weakness: - cost - reported issues with getting remote to sit in charging cradle properly - photoslideshow during charge cant be disabled - cant show 'Favourite' channels as default 1st screen

What a wonderful remote. I have tech-unsavvy parents back home, one of whom is disabled and has mobility problems getting to/from the computer in the other room. As a result, I set up a computer / home theatre PC connected to the big-screen TV for easier use. I realized that this was going to provide another level of complexity to the entertainment system ie. switching to video6 on the TV for computer, video3 for TV, video 5 for DVD player, setting the Yamaha receiver to the right setting, etc. Logitech's Harmony remote has been a lifesaver for them.

Totally customizable, I've set up separate buttons for each activity 'ie. Play DVD, Use Computer' etc. The tilt-sensor that recognizes when the remote is picked up saves my disabled dad an extra step. Though the buttons are a bit on the small side, they protrude out enough that my dad has little difficulty pressing the right buttons. Font / photo sizes can be doubled for the vision-impaired. My parents love the remote. Whenever they run into a roadblock, they just press the 'Help' button and it guides them through it. It's so easy now to configure the entire hifi system with a single button push that my mom thinks it's TOO easy and she's worried that she will get so used to it she'll forget how to operate any of the 'normal' remotes manually. Go figure.

A few minor gripes: The remote switches to a slideshow mode of photos automatically when placed in the cradle. I wish there was an option to disable this and not have to push the 'off display' button every time to save LCD screen life, but apparently there isn't. We have not yet had any problems with the remote not sitting in the cradle properly to charge, that some others are reporting. Secondly, when setting up a 'Watch TV' button, after pressing it there is no option to automatically set the first shown screen to 'Channel Favourites'. Instead, it always switches to a text button menu. Having to press the 'Favourites' button separately is an extra burdening step for my disabled dad who has enough trouble with fine motor functions as it is. Lastly is the price... but if you look online (and search Pricegrabber!) you're likely to find at least a couple sources for $400 models coming out this month (November) the price may drop even further.

Anyways, conclusion: we love it. In fact, I've got a second one on order now for my partner to go along with his new bigscreen TV!

Strengths: Great out-of-box experience with most household remotes, great tech support

Weakness: Getting new codes off the internet does require a modicum of ability

I bought this and left it in the package for at least a month out of sheer intimidation over its power. I envisioned hours of tedious work to get working macros that involved several different components. After a difficult learning experience trying to hack a JP-1 compatible remote, I quietly dreaded the thought of going online and downloading codes for this thing. Well, I couldn't have been more wrong. Setup proved to be effortless right out of the box. This remote worked well with various cheap Apex electronics I have scattered around the house, something that gave my last (cheapo) universal remote a hard time. Moreover, I was thrilled at how well my first macro worked. There was something of a learning curve since this thing has so many features, but getting up to speed has not been difficult and I'm looking forward to putting a few more macros in this week.

Easy to set up and use...

Strengths: super easy setup and easy to use, rechargable, nice display, works with obscure components, nice help wizard

Weakness: Occasionally "misses" a device when turning on/off

This remote is incredibly easy to set up - I charged it, installed the software, plugged it into my computer, answered a couple questions, "trained" it with my cable remote, and it was ready to go.

The display is nice, the buttons are easy to use and find, and the fact that it's rechargable is convinient. I have some rather odd components, including a GoVideo Networked DVD player and a RePlay TV 5060 and it works great with everything.

The only complaint I have so far is that occasionally it will not turn on or off all of the components it should - ie I'll finish watching a DVD and hit off, and will turn off the tv and dvd player but leave the reciever (an Onkyo) on. This may have more to do with the amount of clutter in my room and the position of my components than the remote.

Logitech has designed the remote to be used in conjunction with HDTV and PVR devices, and makes the process of doing things like changing the aspect ratio of your HDTV from 16x9 when on a DVD source, to 4x3 Expanded when on a TiVo.
